I wanted to share that I am now OFFICIALLY an international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC).

But what does that mean? It’s the highest credential possible in lactation care - globally.

It means I spend hundreds of hours learning about human lactation.

It also means I completed 500+ clinical hours under mentorship at Labour & Delivery, at an Oupatient Pediatric Clinic, at a Community Health Clinic and in Private Practice.

It ALSO means I have been working my butt off for the last 4 years making this dream happen and jumping into this new career - all

while raising two beautiful children and (more recently) growing another.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me. Thank you for sharing your stories and your challenges and your successes. They have been my inspiration, and will continue to inspire me, I’m sure, for the rest of my career.

I feel like most new parents need to hear this: feeding often is NORMAL. The tiny humans want to be at the breast for all kinds of reasons – it’s far more than food.
Somehow, feeding 8-12x per day became 8 times per day, and feeding at LEAST every three hours became feeding every 3 hours. Add to that those who say Eat-Play-Sleep, and we are left with a ton of parents who think their baby is broken, difficult, overly demanding, and needy.

Clearly, babies don’t know how to read a clock, they don’t know how to tell time. Try to let go of the notion that “I just fed him!!!! He can’t possibly be hungry” and offer when they ask. Think about it this way – if WE as adults were told we could only drink water every 3 hours, for 15 minutes each time, we probably wouldn’t like that. We like to take a glass of water when we’re thisty, a snack when we are a little hungry, and sometimes, we sit down for the whole meal – and other times, we go for the buffet, taking our time, putting down our forks, and enjoying our food.

Letting go of the expectation of feeding your baby every 3 hours, means a LOT less stress for parents. So, keep track of when your newborn ate to make sure it hasn’t been LONGER than three hours, but don’t worry if it’s been less than that. If baby is gaining well, then chances are, this is nothing but completely normal infant behavior. Your baby isn’t broken – it’s just new to this world.
